(Stereo Image from 2D movie)

The purpose of this laboratory is to extract stereo pairs or an anaglyph from a normal 2D film in AVI format.

In this LAB you can directly operate on the movie to create stereo images without having to extract the frames from the film.

The stereo images produced in this LAB are good bases, which are possible to improve through the other LABs of 3D Gugle, those which specialize in 3D conversions and in retouching.

The image stereo is created using the application of the "Synchronism" principle.
The same principle is also employed in the LAB 3D movie conversion. For further information on the "Synchronism" see the tutorial
"Movie 2D to 3D".

The 2D to 3D conversion method used in this laboratory has been conceived by 3D Gugle and 3D Gugle is the unique owner.

The laboratory is in two sections: a stereo-pairs section and a section to directly produce the anaglyph.
The two sections are separate and accessible by pressing the "
Anaglyph/Stereo
" button.

Please remember also that:

1) To hide/reveal the controls dialogue-box, click on the image to toggle.

2) To move the scroll bars you can use the mouse wheel or the keys.
To use these functions select first the scroll bar by clicking with the mouse.
The active keys are the following "A" and "S" which move one unit, "Z" and "X" which move by several units while "Home" and "End" bring the scroll to each extreme.

3) If your image is too big select the appropriate "Zoom" level in the Zoom list box to reduce the displayed size. The Zoom control is in the same dialogue.
If you set the Zoom option to "Window" 3D Gugle automatically fits your image to the main window.
The zoom function is fast and high quality, providing a blur-free view with no retinal-rivalry.

4) To hide the preview screen and the controls dialogue-box use the standard "minimize" button

5) To see the other functions not described on this page, please consult "Open Stereo Pairs" and "
Common functionality"

To start this LAB select from the menu "Movie": "Stereo image from 2D movie".

Before beginning it is necessary to open the film from which to extract the stereo images.

To open the film use the menu "File".

The film has to be type AVI and possibly compressed using the "Key frame". If the film has not been compiled using "key frame", it is still possible for it to operate but the move between the frames can be slow.

When the film is opened you have to decide whether to produce an anaglyph or a stereo pair.
On pressing the button "
Anaglyph" you enter the "Anaglyph" section. To go out and access the section "Stereo" press the same button now labelled “Stereo”.

When a new film is opened the controls, in the dialogue, are automatically set for operating with stereo pairs and the two images, in side-by-side mode, are shown

La Play section

In this section buttons are available to quickly show the film in order to search the images.
Pressing "
Pause" the film arrests and is set to resume from the point at which it has been paused.
Pressing "
Stop
" the film arrests and automatically returns to the starting point.
To determine the point to start the preview, move the film with scroll-bar.
The two small buttons, set to the left and right of the label that shows the number of the active frames, move the film to the beginning or to the end.

The management of the synchronism

The "synchronism" is the 'frame-jump', or the difference between the natural-sequence left frame-number and right frame-number.

For instance, if you use frame 1 from the left series and frame 3 from the right series, the synchronism has the value 2 (3-1.)

The synchronism can be negative or positive and which you use depends on the dynamics of the scene. Some scenes require positive values, others negative.

Two frames taken from a normal sequence can often be perceived as stereoscopic, the 3D effect depending upon the direction of the movement in the scene and the distance (synchronism) between the two frames.

In the cross-eye example that follows a positive synchronism value (+2) is used because the direction of the movement of the subject is left > right.

In the next example the synchronism is with a negative value (-2) because the direction of the movement of the subject is right > left.

Compensation for errors

The controls dialogue has a lot of functions to align, rotate and to adapt the dimensions of the two images.
The dialogue shows different functions depending of the selected method of operation.

In the image following, the dialogue shows the controls for operating in Stereo-Pairs mode.

The first sector, in orange, is associated with the left image.
The next sector, in
green, is associated with the right image.

The two blocks can
move, resize (zoom) or rotate
the images.
To change the active function, select the corresponding radio button.

The “Together” function allows you to move the left and right images in unison.
The function is only available when the radio-button 'Move' is selected for both images

On checking the function "Box", a rectangle will appear in each window.
The rectangle can be moved and resized with the mouse.
The rectangle is of great help when correcting misalignments and rotation errors.

In the image following, the dialogue shows the controls for operating in Anaglyph mode.

The panel "Move Image" moves the whole image while the panel "Shift Colour" operates only on the "Shift" colour; for instance the Red in the anaglyph Red-Cyan.
With 3D Gugle it is possible to use any combination of colours to create the anaglyphs.
Prior to starting this Lab plan the colour of the Shift from the main menu: "File". Select "Preference" and then:
"Set Anaglyph Colour".

The "Alpha" function.

The "Alpha" function is to correct many errors of vertical alignment and to compensate for other errors of vision.
When the scroll "Alpha" is used the right image is added to that of left by a percentage determined by the value visible in the same scroll.
If the value of Alpha is 255 only the image imposed by the "Sync" step will be visible. For different values two overlapped images will be seen and for the "0" value the right image will be equal to that of left.

In Anaglyph mode and in Stereo-Pairs mode the two panels "Frame" and "Main Size" are always active.

This two sectors control the inter-frames and the dimensions of the main stereo window.

Adding an interspace between the Left/Right images makes viewing easier and more comfortable.

The button, "Back Colour", is for changing the colour of the inter-frame.

In 3D Gugle's "Frame Shop" it is possible to vary the interspace of the frames and see the effect, in stereo, in real time.

The "File"menu

This menu is to open the film on which to operate and to save the Stereo images.
The option "Anaglyph" is only available when the mode "Anaglyph" is active while the other options are only available in the "Stereo" mode.
